The Levels of Development were created by Don Riso in 1977 who wrote the excellent book, more like the Bible, on the Enneagram called Personality Types. Each type description spans from healthy traits, to its average traits, and then to its unhealthy traits. The idea is that there is an overall structure to each personality type. Now this is what really got me hooked and interested in learning more about the Enneagram because I don’t know of any other typology system that really lays out in detail this idea of progress within each personality type.Īnd forgive me, if you’re someone who understands the Enneagram as more than just a personality typology, I know it’s not defined in that way by everyone, but for the sake of this beginners series, let’s look at it in that light. OK so today we’re talking about the Levels of Development.

It’s our most natural instinct to behave like that type when we’re facing negative circumstances. The path of “Stress” goes down in the same direction as the arrow because that’s the easy thing to do. The Enneagram Types in Stress (Disintegration) We use these arrows to recognize when we’re becoming unhealthy or when we’re actively improving ourselves. The arrows inside the Enneagram symbol help us identify when we’re picking up behaviors from other types. Sometimes it doesn’t come easy to us to even recognize, let alone improve, the way our behavior changes when we’re under stress.

The most basic explanation I can give is that these arrows represent the paths of growth and stress that each type goes towards! Different situations evoke different responses from each personality type, and these lines reveal what each type tends to do under either growth or stress. Inside of the Enneagram symbol, there are arrows leading from each type and pointing to another.
